1. From 1332, John's son Edward de Balliol, challenged the reign of David II. Edward finally renounced his claim in 1356.

2. During the second interregnum Edward I of England took over the governing of Scotland, claiming that John de Balliol had forfeited the right to the crown for disobeying him.
